The gala is a big patchwork quilt of fun with toys and sweets. All around the quilt there are all sorts of events: helicopters, fire engines, music, bands, motor bikes and lots, lots more.

Near the edges of the quilt there are lots of stalls with all sorts of interesting and useful things to win. To win the prizes you have to throw hoops and balls.

In the middle of the quilt there is a patch of beauty with a king and queen walking slowly up the aisle, with their golden crowns shining in the sun. As the handsome pageboys and gorgeous flower girls follow, the movement starts to slow down, as everyone looks, watches and stares at them.

And when all the balloons are burst and all the ice cream eaten you can take this quilt with you and dream of all these wonderful things.

Michael Melrose, Newtonloan St Andrew's Primary School

I am a pupil at Newtonloan St Andrew's and when it comes to the time for the Gala Day only one or two of us get picked for the stage. I always remember standing at Assembly and my name being shouted out. I was very excited as I was picked to be a pageboy and my friend Kerry, who started school with me, was picked to be a flower girl. When I got home and told my mum and dad they were very proud of me and so were my Nana, Papa and the rest of my family and friends.

It took two weeks of rehearsal and was hard for Kerry and me, as we had never met any of the other people who were going to be on the stage with us. Luckily we mixed in well with the other children. As well as rehearsals we were busy decorating our gate and garden. My dad and I planned a castle complete with sentry boxes and my mum and Nana made flowers for the arches with flags and a big plaque with my name on it. On top of all this I had to go into Edinburgh and get fitted for a kilt, which felt really weird as, being a boy, I've always worn trousers!

On the Friday before the gala it was time for the dress rehearsal. I was picked up by a car and when I got there I was very nervous when I saw all the people. After the rehearsal I was really looking forward to the next day.

On the day of the gala I was very excited and by the time we got to the park, it was full of people and you could hardly see the stage, which seemed to be miles away. The band started and it seemed ages, as I was to go down carrying the King's robes. Once on the stage it was a great feeling as everyone was looking at us and taking pictures of us. We were made to feel special for that weekend and I have happy memories of that day.
