HISTORY OF NEWTONGRANGE GALA 1993 Questionnaire - Committee
JANE LOCKHART
1. Can you remember your first Gala Day?
As a child, I remember congregating at the Square Park for the march down to the Park as a Committee member it probably involved an early rise, followed by a day of chaos! !
2. What, for you, was the 'Best' Gala you ever helped to organise and why?
As long as the compliments outweigh the complaints, I'd say every Gala is the best. No Gala Day is without its panics but these can be overcome fairly smoothly. As the saying goes "You can't please all of the people, all of the time "
3. Have you any funny stories to tell about your time on the 'Gala Committee' ie fundraising etc?
Some are unprintable, but the best times are had when I'm wearing
fancy dress ie clown outfits etc, because although we're recognised under
the make-up, it's easier to be uninhibited and do things I wouldn't be so
sure of doing in "civvies" !
The dorm at the Border Parachute Centre deserves a mention, too!!
4. Have there been any times when you have wanted to relinquish your position on the Gala Committee?
I think almost every Committee member would agree that "this" Gala will be their last but we're always still hanging in there for the next time(s)!!
5 .Who, would you say, has done more to keep the Galas going and why?
The closeness of the Committee (we're a pretty friendly bunch in the main!), and the Fuhrer-like qualities of our Chairman! ! !
6. What makes a good Committee Member?
Skin like a rhino, patience of a saint, the ability to ignore each other's little foibles, and a stomach strong enough to take the smell of boiled eggs at 6am on the Gala Day! ! !
7. When did you join the Gala Day Committee?
Mid to late 1970's
