Gala Titbits: When it comes to tackling fundraising, the sky's
the limit for Newtongrange Gala Committee. With the help of members of the
Army's Free Fall Parachute Display Team "The Golden Lions", "The
Gala Skydivers" undertook a sponsored parachute jump. A total of £2,700
was raised and donations were made to Gala funds, the local Ambulance Service's
"Heartstart" appeal and the Radio Forth Children's Charity appeal.
Committee members and friends paid training and jump fees out of their own
pockets and travelled down to the Border Parachute Centre at Embleton in Northumberland.
Over a period of two weekends six members of the party undertook solo jumps
exiting from the Cessna plane at 2,000ft and the remaining 11 undertook tandem
jumps from a height of 10,000 ft, freefalling for 5,000 before the main parachute
opens. Everyone involved found the experience exhilarating - indeed, having
enjoyed the sponsored jump so much, Janette Stewart and Jimmy Whyte undertook
a second parachute jump - just for fun.
