The sun shone down on the 70th Jubilee Celebrations of Newtongrange Children's Gala. A large crowd turned out to enjoy a variety of activities throughout the day and voted the occasion a resounding success. The festivities began with a colourful motorcade of gaily-decorated cars making their way through the village. At 1.15pm the Children's Parade, led by the Air Training Corps, left the Square accompanied by a fire engine, a Scouts float, the Mayfield Majorettes, local silver and pipe bands and stock cars on route to the park.
After the crowning of King Michael Clark and Queen Gillian Higginson there was entertainment for everyone throughout the afternoon. Bob Malcolm of Radio Forth organised various competitions and performances were given by the Etta McIntosh School of Dancing, the silver and pipe band and the Mayfield Majorettes. Stalls organised by the PHAB Group, Stock Car Supporters and Newtongrange Community Council were very popular. Other activities included pony rides, a raffle, participation by the Bermuda Exchange Group and a display of diving gear set up by HMS Claverhouse. Teas were provided by the local scouts. Organising committee chairman Miss Janette Stewart would now like to thank everyone who helped make the gala day such a great success. " It was lovely to see the park full of happy, smiling faces," she said.

I am delighted to welcome you to our 1983 Gala Week.
We hope that our programme of events will bring enjoyment to everyone, young
and old alike.
On behalf of the children of Newtongrange and The Gala Committee I would like
to pass on grateful thanks to the hundreds of kind people who have supported
our fundraising efforts during the last year.
To our many patrons who supported us by donation.
To the many individuals who volunteered assistance.
To local and national firms and organisations whose donations were greatly
appreciated.
Because of this loyal support our gala has flourished over the
years and on this our 70th anniversary I am sure we can look forward to many
more galas in the years to come.
The Gala Committe officials and members extend their congratulations to King
Michael and Queen Gillian and the 1983 Royal Court and send them best wishes
for a successful day.
