Newtongrange Gala week concluded on Saturday with the colourful ceremonial coronation of the Gala King and Queen.
Despite heavy rain in the morning the weather gradually improved during the forenoon, and one of the highlights of the community was carried through in fine weather.
More than 1,200 school children assembled in the Square Park and headed by the Newtongrange Lothian Silver Band and Newtongrange Pipe Band and the King and Queen and Court in gaily decked motor vehicles, they marched in procession via Third Street, Lingerwood Road and Main Street lined with spectators to the beautiful setting of the local Public Park.
At the crowning ceremony Mr J. Slater, Chairman of the Gala Committee appealed for more financial support to ensure the continuance of the Gala .
This year's Royal couple were King Brian S.Wilson and Queen Maureen R. Weston, Dux boy and girl at Newtongrange School.

The Chairman on behalf of the Gala Committee presented the King and Queen with watches. After meals, displays of Judo, model aeroplanes, etc. were given by local organisations.
A new feature was a beat band programme, which attracted most of the teenagers present.
