Newtongrange Children's annual gala was held on Saturday last in ideal weather. Over 2000 spectators witnessed the picturesque ceremony of the crowning of Nettie Temple, Dux Girl of Newbattle School, as Queen in the Public Park. A beautifully bedecked platform being erected for the occasion Councillor George T.Reed , Chairman of the Gala Day Committee, presided. Mrs Jessie Smith, Gardiner Place, Newbattle performed the crowning ceremony after which the audience, led by the Newtongrange Lothian Silver Band, joined in the National Anthem.

Mr George Reed presented the Herald - Master McDowall, Dux of the school, with the Gala Day Shield. Mrs Jessie Smith made a personal gift of a beautiful necklace to Queen Nettie Temple, while Mr W Fowler, Headmaster of Newbattle School, on behalf of the Gala Day Committee, presented wristlet watches to the Queen and the Herald, while Mr George Lamb, Headmaster of Newtongrange School, presented boxes of chocolates to each member of the Queen's court. Mrs Jessie Smith was presented with the Queens bouquet by Christina McDonald. Mrs Elizabeth Taylor acted as Queen Mother.

The children marched in procession, with flying banners, via Main Street, to Victoria Park, where they were entertained. Newtongrange Lothian Silver Band and Arniston Pipe Band discoursed music at intervals . A varied programme of sports followed under the supervision of Messrs Fowler and Lamb, the respective headmasters of Newbattle a Newtongrange School.
