Newtongrange Children’s Day
----------
Successful Gala Held
--------

Discontinued since the outbreak of hostilities, The Newtongrange and District Children’s Gala Day was resuscitated on Saturday.
As the picturesque crowning ceremony was held in abeyance; the pomp and pageantry of former gala day celebrations was missing.
The children numbering over 1200 were assembled in The Square Park; and headed by the local pipe and silver bands marched to the Welfare Park, where they received a bag of eatables, milk and a new threepenny piece (just over 1p). During the afternoon the Newtongrange Lothian Silver Band, under Mr. Farrow; Newtongrange and District Pipe Band (Pipe Major M. Scott), and the Newtongrange Lothian and Juvenile Pipe Bands (Pipe Major Alex McIntosh) rendered musical programmes, and dancing exhibitions were given by pupils of Miss Law and Miss Brownlie. A sports programme, under the convenorship of the local headmasters, Messrs. Wallinck and Lamb, assisted by teaching staff and committee members produced large entries and keen finishes in many races.
As dux of Newbattle Junior Secondary School, James Gilchrist, Sixth Street, Newtongrange, gained the Gala Day Committee’s dux championship shield.
The function was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and it is hoped that the gala day celebrations in their entirety may be possible next year.
