HISTORY OF NEWTONGRANGE GALA
1923-1940 GALAS
In May 1923 my Grandfather, Mr James Smith was instrumental in instigating
a Public Meeting with the intention of resuming the Newtongrange Gala Day
that had been in abeyance since the summer of 1914.
The meeting was successful and the Galas resumed in August with resounding
success. Main participants included Emma Quinto, the Dux of the Public School
and George Thomson, Dux Boy.
The recorded Galas will complete the Chapter simply because they give a more
personal report than simply assessing the available facts. Each Gala was attended
by a Dalkeith Advertiser Reporter who reviewed what he saw of each individual
Gala.
