The old costumes were very unpopular with the boys. At the dress rehearsal of the 1949 gala day the King, Charlie Briggs, tried on his costume and then locked himself in the toilet refusing to come out. We don't know how many people lost their sweet ration coupons to entice him back out but, as you can see from the photo all was eventually resolved.
